Our fam over at Silence Nogood reached out to us about curating a playlist for International Women’s Day. In a production world heavily dominated by males, we felt obligated to pay tribute to a few of our favorite female beat makers that are holding it down for women everywhere. Dubbed ‘Women Behind The Boards’, peep our selections below.
Selection notes below:
♦ Cali based future bass innovator VenessaMichaels is the epitome of 90s cool in both style and sound. Her #2090 (coined) sub-genre blends 90s top lines with energetic 808-driven bass music.
♦ The future is looking bright for Poland born producer Chloe Martini. With a sound that lives at the intersection of hip-hop, R&B and pop, with funk infusion, this twenty-something continues to hold her own among heavily male concentrated french label RocheMusique.
♦ Toronto based multi-faceted talent Maylee Todd is a songwriter, producer, designer and performer that brings together elements of boogie, bossa, space funk psychedelia and soul into a sound that is smooth, honest and inspiriting.
♦ WondaGurl is one of future sound label Soulection’s more elusive producers / DJs. Although her profile pages and social communications don’t reveal much, this chick is clearly contributing to the development of the Sound of Tomorrow.
♦ Fool’s Gold affiliated DJ / producer KITTENS has been championed by A-trak over the years for good reason. Her aggressive hip-hop / electronic / future beats sound juxtaposes her fluffy name frequently leaving audiences shook. One fourth of LA based collective Athletixx, the cat queen continues to pioneer LA Club music.
♦ Veteran DJ / producer Ëlē got her start spinning vinyls nearly a decade ago. Now she’s praised as a multi-faceted beat maker / DJ with notable residencies and collaborations under her belt, as well as being an official curator for monthly compilation series Culture.
