What a day it has been for listicles. So much incredible content has flooded internet airwaves that we had to start compiling it all into longer form posts. ‘Funk’ in particular is friggin’ everywhere right now, as retro vibes are being recycled at greater scale than ever before. We hear it in Hip-Hop (see: LNDN DRGS), in R&B (see: Anderson Paak), in Pop (see: Josh Tobias) and countless other genres. See below for three of our favorite Funk infused tracks of the last week. All of which are strikingly unique.
Tom Mitchell and Jonny Rhodes make up TWOGOOD, a Funk / Disco duo out of Leeds (England) that’ll have you boogie-ing until your feet bleed. Three days ago they released a Nu Funk edit of James Brown’s “Got Ants In My Pants” and it’s making us want to shred around a roller rink ASAP. Dank bass lines, sped-up BPM and just the right amount of ‘cowbell’ and we’re hooked like a marlin out in the open sea ; )
We don’t know too much about Two Another other than that they hit us with a message on SoundCloud mentioning they released this new track called “Higher”. Good thing we read all of our messages because this track is silky smooth to say the least. Clean vocals, stellar instrumentation and great depth to the production. Sounds like PREP has some mysterious competition.
D.C. based platform / collective Fête is legitimately growing fast, and for good reason. Their uploads keep getting better and better, spanning an eclectic mix of sounds. Today their curation gets funky, giving us a selection from collective friend RNDYSVGE dubbed “Igotwtuneed”. Live bass, creamy vocals and polished percussion come together for a vibe that is exactly what we need on Hump Day.
