Age is often overlooked in electronic music, as young DJs and producers seem to be popping up everywhere these days. But it would be inaccurate to say that age doesn’t play an integral role in music maturity, ability and overall artistry. With age comes greater skill, perspective and ultimately.. success. There are talents in this industry though that excel much earlier than others, having innate characteristics and a natural feel for music that puts them ahead of the competition. Montreal based DJ / producer known as RICHEY (formerly Richey G) is a strong example. Although DJ’ing was just a hobby in his teens, he published his first record at 15-years-old.
Since then it has been nothing but progression for RICHEY. At 16-years-old the young’n started spinning afterhours gigs throughout Montreal. Over time he established his name as a notable underground DJ, eventually securing a residency at Circus Afterhours, while also locking down appearances at venues and events like Stereo Nightclub, Igloofest and Salon Daome. Fast forward to today and the still young talent has released music on John Digwee’s Bedrock Records, Nicole Moudaber’s MOOD imprint, Moda Black and Tiga’s Turbo Recordings. Not bad for being just 21-years-old.
We caught up with Richey this past weekend to talk a bit about his beginnings, inspirations in music and plans for 2015. Peep our full Sunday Conversation below.
JADAMIX: Is Richey your real name or stage name?
RICHEY: Yes Richey (pronounced ”rich-e”) is my real real name.
What is a typical day like with you?
Wake up and go for a morning walk around the block, then hit the studio for the whole day. Occasionally do some school work depending on if I need to.
We read that you got into music at a very young age, experimenting with piano and guitar. What influenced you to explore the world of DJing / producing?
Electronic music in general influenced me as I believe the genre would eventually take over the industry sooner rather than later. It’s happening as we speak…
Describe your music in 3 words.
New. Right. Fun.
Ideal setting for your music?
Radio & Club Play.
What is the best piece of advice you would offer a DJ that wants to explore production?
Try and create your own genre. Make something that hasn’t been heard before which will appeal to your target audience.
What artists / producers are influencing your sound at the moment?
Disclosure’s album was great. SOPHIE produces some music too which I adore.
Name a favorite up-and-coming artist or producer coming out of Montreal at the moment?
Friend of mine ANDRU makes amazing, forward-thinking music.
Do you have any good underground club recommendations in Montreal?
Montreal is great for its festivals such as Igloofest, Piknic Electronik and Osheaga. I’d recommend those.
What is your vice?
Most memorable show you have played?
South America Tour was memorable.
If you could work with any singer / songwriter in the world at the moment, who would it be?
We love that Ed Sheeran remix you produced. How did that come about?
I sent it to a handful of people including Ed Sheeran’s team and the people over at Atlantic Records. They ended up approving it and made it official!
We read that you are currently studying business in Montreal? How do your studies help your music career?
They don’t help in any way. On the contrary, they hinder it.
What are your thoughts on Future Funk? There is a huge community / following in Montreal. Would you ever explore adding more funk / disco into your dance music?
If it makes sense to add such elements into my songs… Why not!
What is upcoming for Richey for the rest of 2015 / early 2016?
Finalizing a couple of remixes and originals.
