We threw up a tweet earlier today that resonated with a bunch of folks. Specifically we said, “don’t aspire to sign a deal. The tools to distribute your music and market yourself are right in front of you”. We would stand by that with every ounce of intention.
The truth is we live in a digital world. One that is abundant with resources to share content, communicate, grow an audience and monetize. The days of ‘signing to a (major) label’ to get exposure and break as an artist are over. Those that can harness the power of social media, digital communications and emerging technologies will win. Yes, a label does provide capital.. but if you prove demand for your music, couldn’t you just raise money to promote it?
Here is an example of an indie artist that is winning — Aric Ogle aka Aso. The Los Angeles based beat maker / DJ / multi-instrumentalist creates music primarily in his own home. He has amassed a sizable and engaged audience without a major label or any of that bullshit beauracracy. Regardless of whether his music is on the radio or in movies, he is rich in artistry and purpose.
Any how.. peep his newest tune — “Always Let You Know” — a mellow hip-hop vibe with tid bits of funk and jazz infusion. Bout to light up a doobie and lay out on a bean bag to this one. That’s our two cents for the day.
