It isn’t often that we meet artists who share the exact same interests as us: Nu-Disco, Beer and Craig David. Furthermore, artists that support a similar outlook on life as us — living it to the fullest. Matlock bred Nu-Disco / Funk trio Patawawa may just be our brothers (and sisters) from another mother.
Their sound is comprised of joyous melodies, catchy lyrics and a funky disco feel that is groovy enough to resonate with your elders, yet Nu Cool enough to vibe with modern millennials. Having garnered support by BBC Radio and countless other blogs & tastemakers, these three are well on their way to breaking big.
Beyond their uniqueness and quality of sound, Patawawa has an impressive level of camaraderie and an infectiously light-hearted collective personality. They are witty, charismatic and clearly having a fun time while creating amazing music. Artists with this approach are poised to win in the music industry.
We shot the shit with them last week over Facebook (beer in hand(s) for both parties). Peep the interview below…
JADAMIX: How did the three of you come together?
Patawawa: We (Sam and Rory) began making tunes together from a young age and then made ‘Charmer’. We knew Beth from school and knew she could hit a bloody good note or two! So we invited her down to do some guest vocals and that tune made its way onto BBC Introducing and broadcast on local radio, so we invited Beth in permanently!
How did “Red and White” come together?
‘Red and White’ came together from Rory doing his usual ting in the studio. He got a whole backing track together and then showed it to Sam and Beth who were thrilled with the result! Sam already had a pre written verse and chorus and the melody seemed to just flow. Rory and Beth pinned down the second verse and the rest is history!
If you could open for any act right now on tour, who would it be?
Chic, we all love Chic!
What do you each bring to the table musically?
Rory brings a whole heap of funky disco music shit, Beth brings some serious lungs and Sam brings the ragga lyrics haha.
What are your individually requests prior to performing (ex // Katy Perry likes a bowl of purple M&Ms before each performance )?
We haven’t been lucky enough to have our own rider yet but as long as there is beer we are happy!
If you had to add one more addition to the group, is there anyone in particular you’d recruit? And what would they do?
Craig David as a hype man.
If you had to choose one of you three to represent Patawawa at the World Beer Olympics… who would it be?
We all love a drink but I think this honour would be awarded to Rory!
If you each were able to have a super power, what would they be?
Sam – I would like to be Batman, he is a pretty cool bastard!
Rory – I would like to Fly like a bird Nelly Furtado style.
Beth – Oooo telekeniesis so I could do the stop hitting yourself trick on Sam and Rory while on stage.
What artists inspire your sound?
We are inspired by a whole lot of people but 70’s/80’s disco music is probably our main inspiration. We also take inspiration from the Nu-Disco scene. Both old and modern are good!
Favorite city you’ve played?
Sheffield or Manchester.
Describe the perfect setting for your music.
A load of sweaty messes ready to dance the night away!
What do we have to look forward to for the rest of 2015 / early 2016?
For the rest of 2015 we are gigging and releasing new tunes. On the 16th of november we will be supporting ‘Prides’ at the Rescue Rooms in Nottingham. We are looking forward to that one a lot! We are also releasing a brand new track with Roman Kouder called ‘Fly’ hopefully within the next couple of weeks. So keep your ears peeled for that one! We are very excited to share that one with everyone soon. In 2016 we will be doing much of the same, with some gigs in different countries. Hopefully we’ll be able to get a tour going too!
