Dev09 may be a bit of a foreign name to you right now, but don’t expect that phenomenon to last much longer. Devin Murphy, the 18-year-old artist behind the project, hails all the way from South Bend (aka Bumblefuck), Indiana, and is ready to make a place for herself in the industry.
Originally discovered by Stelios Phili on Soundcloud (known best for his production work with A$AP Ferg), Dev09 released “LETHAL”—a track just under two minutes with a “stuck in the suburbs” theme—in June. Now she’s back with a killer followup, “You Made Me” (also produced by Phili), and we got a chance to talk to her about it…via text. Punctuality may not be her strong suit, but we sure didn’t hold it against her.
Read on as we discuss Pink Moscato (won’t hold that against her either), working in the industry at such a young age, and more.
ALYSSA: So Dev, what’s a typical day like for you?
DEV: A typical day for me would be picking out something dope to wear, (sometimes) heading to class, always writing songs, and then smoking and eating. Occasionally hating on people on Snapchat, too. I like to do that.
Tell us what you’re smoking, and then I’m assuming that has some affect on what you’re later eating as well.
I have this swag friend Niko who’s super generous with weed so usually hybrids, always kush. Really miss Cali weed though. Food wise you can catch me getting chicken noodle soup and Noodles & Co. any given day. Also strong supporter of popcorn, stir fries, and pizza.
Dev09: Ugh oh my god that looks amazing. I’m about to whip that pic out at the Noodles & Co. next time I’m there and demand they step it up.
(Alyssa blushes intensely) So let’s talk partying. You’re only 18. How has that affected the way you’ve been treated in the industry so far? Are you still able to go out and have a good time?
Partying wise, I’ve always been straight up about anything I do because I never want to be locked in as some type of basic bitch pop artist who’s supposedly never heard of drugs. I think if anything the age factor benefits me because I like to think I’ve defined myself as a person much earlier on than others. But yes, I would never let the industry’s opinion of me affect what I do to have a good time.
Describe your music in three words.
Fresh, unique, authentic.
When we listen to your music we definitely hear some female influences like Lorde, Alessia Cara, and even some Grimes. I’m sure you’ve gotten at least one of those comparisons before. What women in music do you follow and get inspiration from?
Not to be anti-feminist or anything but I actually don’t listen to too many current female artists. Mostly I just listen to rap 24/7. Amy Winehouse is the main woman I’ve drawn inspiration from, just because I grew up with her and relate to her so much it’s a little unnerving.
Do you like any female rappers? Nicki? Lil’ Kim? Eve? Even Azeaila Banks?
Yes for sure! Nicki kills it at an insane level but because she’s a woman she doesn’t get the credit she deserves. She’s a star around the world, but damn, she’s still slept on. I fuck with Azealia Banks (but I don’t agree with everything she says). Her flow is fucking awesome and her dedication to music is inspiring. Also love Angel Haze, although Haze doesn’t identify as male or female, but I still think she’s amazing for feminists because she’s about self empowerment. Oh! And Kehlani’s the shit too.
Let’s discuss your new single “You Made Me”. Stelios Phili produced it. How the hell was it working with a dude who’s created tracks with artists like Danny Brown, A$AP Ferg, and Big Sean (just to name a few)?
I made the demo for “You Made Me” back in December and then sent it to Stelios a little later. It’s just about getting the fuck out of a small minded, white washed town, and shitting on everyone that was a bitch to me. Stel is a godsend, creatively we have great chemistry and I’m so grateful to have a mob connection like that. Ugh, I’m just waiting for the day I can change my Twitter name to A$AP Dev09, ya feel?
I don’t see how that eventually doesn’t happen.
Have you thought of any ideas or concepts for the music video yet?
Yes! The video is about to be awesome. This guy Brett Haley, who premiered his most recent movie at Sundance, slid into the IG DMs wanting to direct the video as a passion project. He’s flying out to South Bend at the end of this month so we can film it! I’m so stoked, I don’t want to give away any surprises, but it’s basically a day in the life of me in South Bend and it’s about to be fucking baller.
Rocky, Travis, or Vince Staples.
Fave way to blaze / fave drink?
Well now that I’m a college girl, I definitely have to pick bongs. Fave drink is now pink moscato as one can see by looking back at a few of my embarrassing tweets.
You have 24 hours left to live. What are you doing?
I’m performing with Nickleback and a bunch of adorable little animals at the Staples Center, while skyping with Kim Jong-Un. Like teacup pigs and shit.
Well that’s specific. Ok last one. What’s next for you? Can we expect an EP out anytime soon?
It’s my last 24 hours, gotta do it big! And, yes! Stel and I are currently working on a 5 song EP that’s super cohesive with the “You Made Me” vibe. Really just trying to get a Down AKA Kilo feature. Planning on rolling shit out in whatever way makes sense after the video release.
And then we all break for the premiere of “Hotline Bling”…
